QARESS - QuAntitative Resilience-based managEment and Sustainability for Social-ecological Systems

3 tasks IRN QARESS

The International Research Network named QARESS QuAntitative Resilience-based managEment and Sustainability for Social-ecological Systems  is an interdisciplinary and international network initially funded by CNRS and dedicated to advancing research and knowledge in the field of resilience-based management for  social-ecological systems (SESs). Our mission is to promote resilience-based management and sustainability through quantitative analysis and innovative modeling approaches. In particular the IRN QARESS will advance both the development of ecological-economic model-based scenarios and the comparison of these scenarios in terms  of social-ecological metrics related to the SDGs.

For this, the quantitative framework of the 3Rs of resilience (Recovery, Resistance, Reliability) Grafton et al, 2019) will be tested on several contrasted case studies in Australia, Europe, North America and Africa in collaboration with the different partners and countries involved in the IRN.

QARESS will take advantage of the complementary and internationally recognized expertise of the consortium in terms of bio-economics (CEE-M, IDIV, USC), food systems (CGIAR, WUR), public policy (CSPP) and decision sciences (GERAD).

The activities of QARESS are decomposed into three main tasks as illustrated by the figure 1 below:

  • Task 1: Reinforce a scientific network worldwide for the resilience-based policy of SES;

  • Task 2: Support the development of models and scenarios for the resilience-based policy of SES;

  • Task 3: Prepare international proposals about the resilience-based policy of SES.
